A large, fast growing tree from lowland dry deciduous forests in tropical Africa to 50 m (165 ft.) tall. a straight, buttressed trunk. The hard fruits smell like overripe apples and contain 2 to 3 hard-shelled dark, oily, aromatic seeds that are edible, preferably boiled or roasted. The sweet, light oil extracted from the seeds has a number of applications. The soft, light wood is used for pulp. It is a good shade tree for coffee and cocoa and also makes a fine ornamental for the tropics and a good tree for avenue due to its straight and even growth.
